Fishermen
and tarpon guides come and go as quickly as the tides on Boca
Grande. Due to the increased popularity of sportfishing, many
guides from out of the area now make a seasonal migration to
fish the unfamiliar waters of Boca Grande.
As a third generation tarpon
fisherman born and raised on the island, this is certainly not
the case for Cappy Joiner. The Joiner family has inhabited the
barrier islands of Boca Grande Pass and fished its waters
since the 1800s.
Cappy was raised on Boca Grande
waters. As a child he fished for mullet, mackerel, kingfish,
grouper, tarpon, and cobia with his father and uncles. Growing
older, he became a commercial fisherman, and in 1964, he
became a licensed captain and charter guide. When charter fishing grew to become an "industry" on
the island, Cappy was a founding member of the Boca Grande
Fishing Guides Association, an organization dedicated to the
preservation of the fishery as well as the traditional ways of
tarpon fishing.
Cappy has served as an officer
for the BGFA since its inception, and has been President of
the organization for the past 10 years.
Coming from one of the area's
original fishing families, Cappy is related to many of the
Boca Grande fishing guides. The Joiners, Colemans, Darnas,
Rodriguezes, Mills, Potters, and Hayeses are all part of the island's fishing
legacy. If Cappy is unavailable for your vacation dates, he
can easily arrange for you to fish with another qualified, and
probably related, guide.
